Robert McRay describes why he uses Goodman Shipping Los Feliz to pack and ship his BIGHEAD mechanical sculptures, and how we do it...

Obama Big HeadWe have some extremely talented customers at Goodman Packing & Shipping, like Robert McRay, who ships his wonderful BIGHEAD mechanical sculptures with us because he knows we do what it takes to get them to their destinations safely and on time. To Robert, the care we take in packing his BIGHEADs is important, he even has a page describing the process on his site.

PACKING AND SHIPPING

"While each BIGHEAD mechanical sculpture is unique, they all receive the highest degree of care while packaging and shipping.

After many years of searching, I found the most reliable and trustworthy individual with SERGIO (with Goodman Packing & Shipping in Los Feliz). He is the ONLY person I trust with packaging my sculptures, as he knows the unique aspects of each piece and takes many variables under consideration that most professionals would miss. Suffice to say, every BIGHEAD is in good hands with SERGIO. "

first we examine Big Head we start cutting styroafoam to brace sections of the Big Head then the Big Head gets its first layer of bubble wrap at Box brothers, we check every step of the process to ensure it will be secure and ship safely
"Packaging begins with examining each BIGHEAD for its unique needs for the best protection. " "Sections of styrofoam are individually cut and placed at various stress points." "After bracing, the BIGHEAD is wrapped in the first layer of bubble wrap.. " "Frequent measurements and close examination is conducted with every step.. "
at Goodman Packing & Shipping we make sure its secure extra bubble wrap and a corrugated layer
"Additional pieces of styrofoam are cut and placed where needed to absorb any shock. " "More layers of bubble wrap, and then the piece is enclosed in layers of corrogated cardboard. " "A custom box is created and braced with sections of styrofoam boarding." "The BIGHEAD is centered in the box (the styrofoam boarding can also be seen). "
stryrofoam peanust are added to the item to surround it we make sure the peanuts are uniformly distributed to surround the item finally the item is fully encased with styrofoam foam panels are added to protect the walls of the box
"Styrofoam peanuts are slowly added to the container, which encase the sculpture." "Frequent manipulation of the styrofoam peanuts is needed for uniform bracing." "More styrofoam peanuts are added until the sculpture is completely enclosed" "Styrofoam panels are custom cut and installed for additional protection. "

"Once everything is packed the box is sealed and ready for shipment to the client."

"It is important to keep in mind that the above photographs are offered only as insight on how much care and respect goes into packaging each BIGHEAD mechanical sculpture. Every sculpture is unique and therefore may be packaged in a different method, which can ensure adequate protection for its own unique aspects. Whatever the case, every sculpture is in good hands with SERGIO."

Packaging & Shipping Tips for the Holiday Season

1. New boxes are the best, used corrugated boxes can lose 60% of their strength in one use.
2. If you want to reuse a carton, make sure the carton is fully intact, no holes, tears and has not been previously crushed.
3. On a used box make sure to remove any existing labels and addresses.
4. Do not use any boxes that used to contain ORM-D materials (household quantities of hazardous materials such as perfume, aftershave, compressed cans, bleach, cleaners, chemicals.) Usually they display a blue and white label with ORM-D on it.
5. Keep fragile items away from the edge of the carton, maintain at least 2-3 inches of cushioning between breakable items and the box.
6. Pack the box tight, once packaged the items should not shift inside the box. If you can give the box a good shake without feeling the items move around, that is good.
7. Boxes should be packaged to withstand a drop from 3 – 4 ft. Conveyor belts and transfers can equal being dropped 3-4 ft. Most items are damaged on the conveyor belts and sorting systems, next is being crushed from being stacked.
8. Styrofoam peanuts are great filler, they are not protection. Heavy items will simply settle thru peanuts unless wrapped in foam or bubblewrap to spread the weight out.
9. Fragile items need to be protected before you gift wrap them. You can protect the outside of the box but unless you protect the item from moving around and damaging itself you won’t accomplish what you need to do.
10. Fragile, This Way Up, Top Load Only stickers look good, but do not have any effect on how a package is handled. The conveyor belts don’t read and the drivers and loaders are too busy to. Packages will be stacked and placed on conveyor belts how best meets the needs of the system.
11. Best practice, include a slip of paper in the box with the full name, address and phone number of the "ship to". The best is to also include a count of the number of items in the box.
12. Small gifts or cards should be attached to larger items to help keep them from being lost. Many small items are thrown out with shipping boxes due to being left under a flap, lost in the Styrofoam peanuts or other packaging materials.
13. Declared value coverage can be purchased, but the coverage will not cover you unless the items are properly packaged. Make sure you hold on to receipts to prove the value of the items. If something happens, make sure the recipient retains all the packaging and damaged goods until the claim has been paid, regardless what you are told during the claim process. Hanging onto the materials until the end ensures that lost claim papers and mistakes don’t cost you the claim. Remember that all claims are subject to the carriers approval of the packaging and proof of value. If they don’t approve it then the claim will be denied.

Our friend Eve asked us for a couple of old busted pallets. We said. "Sure.." She made planters out of 'em. Another one of our many talented customers. We're fortunate to work with folks like Eve. How'd she do that? check it out in her own words...

  • recycling pallets into planters
  • we believe in recycling our packing materials and Eve does this creatively
  • Goodman Packing & Shipping is a Green packing and shipping company
  • at Goodman Packing & Shipping we recycle packing and shipping materials
<

Step One:
• Acquiring pallets (thank you Goodman Packing & ShippingLos Feliz!)
• Sanding away the rough spots
• Nailing down loose or broken boards

Step Two:
• Finishing, staining, painting the pallets. (the more sealed these puppies are, the better!)

Step Three:
• Create “planter” aspect with landscaping fabric
• I used fabric from Home Depot (2 rolls for $10)
• With a staple gun, I sealed the pallet on 4 sides, sealing the sides like a wrapped present.
• I also created pocket/shelves with the fabric behind each board; this is an extra step not always suggested in online tutorials.

Step Four:
• Placing, hanging, arranging new planter in its permanent location
• Be prepared for the pallet-planter to be very heavy; many people leave them on the ground, leaning up against the house, a patio fence, etc.

Step Five:
With potting soil, plant your plants! I used drought-friendly succulents that I knew would be low-maintenance.

Do you have a project we can help with?
